New Study Shows “Peak Times” For Trucking Accidents
Trucking accidents can be severe, regardless of what time of year or what time of day they occur. A new study by DriveCam pinpoints the time of year and time of day that most trucking collisions or near collisions happen, giving all drivers notice of when to be most alert.
DriveCam Study
A study by DriveCam found that during certain times of the year trucking collisions and near-collisions are higher than during other times of the year. Between July and November accidents rates are three-times higher than between January and June.
The study further broke down the information to indicate that trucking collisions and near-collisions were highest on Tuesdays and Fridays, with the most accidents occurring between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. and again between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. - the fewest collisions or near-collisions occurring between 11 p.m. and 9 a.m.
Commenting on DriveCam's data indicating higher collision and near-collision rates later in the day, David Kelly, former acting administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), notes: "It makes sense that driving gets riskier as the day goes on." He speculates that possible explanations include:
- People generally drive drunk later in the day, not in the morning
- Drivers tire over the course of the day
- Visibility decreases as it gets darker
DriveCam, comparing long-haul trucking collision and near-collision data with that of other industries, also found that long-haul trucking collision and near-collision rates are, on average, approximately five percent higher.
Safety Tips
To avoid traffic collisions with large trucks, whether it is during rush hour or other peak times of the evening, consider these safety tips when sharing the road with semi-trailer trucks:
- Avoid blind spots - if you cannot see the truck's mirrors, the truck driver cannot see you.
- Allow plenty of room between your car and the truck before moving lanes and pulling in front of the truck - trucks need more time than cars to stop.
- Be vigilant of a truck's turn signals.
- Do NOT pass a truck on the right when the truck is beginning a right turn.
If you have been involved in an accident with a semi-truck, talk with an experienced attorney. Personal injury cases involving commercial trucks can be complex, involving maintenance records, drivers' logs and federal regulations.
